Transactional Sex in Forced Displacement and Humanitarian Settings

21 November 2025 | Technical Dialogue, Médecins Sans Frontières, Geneva, Switzerland.

Co-Organisers: Liminality Research Consortium, Gender Centre, Geneva Graduate Institute and the ListenH Project, International Institute of Social Studies

The Technical Dialogue on Transactional Sex in Humanitarian Settings and Forced Displacement, held in November 2025 at the MSF premises in Geneva, convened researchers, practitioners, and colleagues from across the sector to examine emerging evidence and consider its implications for policy and practice. Organized by the Liminality Research Consortium and the ListenH Project, the meeting provided a dedicated space to clarify concepts, discuss challenges in current approaches, and identify practical steps to strengthen health and protection responses for displaced populations. Participants agreed on several follow-up actions, including the preparation of a consolidated report and recommendations, the establishment of a working group to develop a concise statement on conceptual clarity around transactional sex, and an online reconvening in six months to review progress and outline next steps.
