Liminality Research-Advocacy-Policy (RAP) Coalition

Why Liminality Research-Advocacy-Policy (RAP) Coalition?
The Liminality RAP Coalition addresses the need for a collaborative platform bridging research, advocacy, and policy to tackle systemic inequities. It focuses on the unique challenges faced by people of diverse Sexual Orientations, Gender Identities, and Expressions, and Sex Characteristics (SOGIESC) who are forcibly displaced—including refugees, asylum seekers, undocumented individuals, and others in similar situations (referred to as queer refugees). The Coalition aims to generate evidence, foster advocacy, and inspire gender-responsive, rights-informed solutions to improve their conditions and well-being.

What are the objectives?

The ultimate goal of the Liminality RAP Coalition is to enhance the health, well-being, and living conditions of queer refugees. The Coalition seeks to:

  • Inform research and generate evidence that reflects lived experiences.
  • Foster collaborative research and advocacy efforts.
  • Inform gender-responsive, rights-based policy and programming.
Who can become a member?

The Coalition is open to individuals and organisations involved in research, advocacy, community engagement, humanitarian work, or policy-making aligned with its goals. Participation is by invitation to ensure a safe, respectful, and collaborative environment. Existing members are encouraged to recommend others, while interested individuals can express interest via the form below.

How often does the group meet?

The Coalition meets virtually twice a year, with additional meetings arranged as needed for specific initiatives or collaborations. Between meetings, communication occurs via email or other secure channels.

What does the Coalition aim to produce?

The Coalition aims to produce actionable research, joint advocacy events, statements, policy recommendations, and shared resources to drive meaningful change globally. It serves as a vital platform to connect, mobilise, and harmonise efforts, maximising collective impact.

Our Core Principles

The Liminality Research Consortium conducts collaborative research to advance knowledge, advocacy, and policy reform for populations facing systemic inequities. Our work centres on marginalised communities at the intersections of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and forced displacement. We recognise the intersecting forms of marginalisation and structural barriers that contribute to vulnerability and exclusion.

To ensure inclusive representation, we use the term “affected populations,” encompassing people of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC), as well as those with intersecting identities related to race/ethnicity, indigeneity, sex work, disability, HIV status, and other axes of marginalisation.

To foster a safe and respectful environment, members of the Coalition commit to:

  1. Respect for Diverse Perspectives: Valuing the range of views shared within the Coalition and amplifying the voices of affected populations. Guidance from civil society and community-based organisations informs our work to ensure relevance and impact.
  2. Recognition of Privilege and Marginalised Voices: Acknowledging privilege and prioritising insights from those with direct experience, ensuring decisions are guided by lived realities.
  3. Collaboration and Transparency: Promoting transparency in communication, decision-making, and conflict resolution, fostering trust and accountability.
  4. Safe and Inclusive Environment: Creating a space where members feel respected, supported, and free from discrimination, while ensuring confidentiality and prioritising well-being.
  5. Accountability: Taking responsibility for actions within the Coalition, recognising contributions, and ensuring community voices and intellectual input are appropriately acknowledged.
