Research Consultant, Participatory Photography/Photovoice (F/M/D)

Objective:

We are seeking an experienced research consultant with expertise in participatory photography, particularly Photovoice, to support a multi-country research consortium. The consultant will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) and research team members to provide training, facilitate Photovoice activities in selected research countries, and contribute to data analysis, writing, and other research outputs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Train and provide support to key research team members on Photovoice methodology and ethical considerations.
  • Design, prepare, and co-facilitate Photovoice activities alongside one or two research team members, initially in Switzerland and Greece, with possible expansion to Lebanon and Turkey.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to ensure the effective implementation of the Photovoice methodology.
  • Ensure an ethical and participatory approach, particularly in engaging refugees of diverse SOGIESC.
  • Support data analysis and synthesis of findings.
  • Contribute to research outputs, including reports, publications, photobooks, and exhibitions.
  • Document and analyse the implementation process, capturing key insights and challenges.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Advanced degree in social sciences, gender studies, migration studies, human rights, international relations, visual studies, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in using Participatory photography (e.g., Photovoice) as a research methodology.
  • Experience in qualitative data analysis and research writing.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with international research teams.
  • Experience training and mentoring researchers in participatory approaches.
  • Strong facilitation skills, particularly in diverse cultural settings.
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills in English.
  • Ability to feasibly travel within Europe and, ideally, to other research sites, with the necessary documentation for entry.

Desired Qualifications and Experience:

  • Familiarity with feminist and queer theories.
  • Knowledge of humanitarian and asylum contexts.
  • Prior experience working with marginalised communities.
  • Proficiency or knowledge in additional languages (e.g., Arabic, Turkish, Greek, French, or Farsi/Dari) would be an asset.

Compensation:

Daily consultancy rates for this position will be reviewed and determined based on the candidate’s qualifications, years of relevant experience, local rates, and cost of living in the research locations.
